Market Research Market Research is a way to find out what the public wants, likes, and buys. It is a form of sociology which points to understanding the behavior, whims, and performances of consumers in the market based economy. The research tells them what the companies need to do to get the attention, and money, of the customers. They have to find out what makes the people tick, what drives them, what do they want, how can we make a product reach out and grab the consumer. How much can we charge for a product and still sell a lot of it. There are many ideas and questions the market researcher has to find out from the public and in order to do this, many of them run a poll or do a survey. In some cases they also send sample of the product to a specific number of people and after they have tried the product, get their opinion of it to see if they liked it or not. In some cases the need to know if anyone had any side effects from the products, such as rashes, hives, etc.. Arthur Neilsen was the founder of the ACNeilsen Company and was the first research company to begin marketing research for other companies. He began this in 1923. The marketing research company will collect data about the products. Then they do a secondary research by researching data which was published by others about the products. The same difference between these two types of research also is the same difference between the exploratory research and the conclusive research. Exploratory research gives insights into a situation or an issue. It should draw a conclusion with caution. Conclusive research does just that, it draws conclusions and gives final results of the study. Exploratory research is performed when there is a problem with the product and it needs to be discovered and the problem eliminated. This research has to get a basic idea about a solution for the problem. Exploratory research is collected by focus group interviews. There is also reviewing literature or books and discussing the problem with experts. It is not just large corporations that use marketing research. There are also small scale surveys and focus groups which can be used and market research is a low cost way to get information from potential and existing consumers. There are many survey companies on the internet who need people to take their surveys and the members are compensated for taking the surveys. Some of them just give you points and you can cash them in when you have accumulated enough, or some of them enter you in a drawing for cash or prizes.
