Stem Cell Research
Stem cell research is a very hot topic today and many think it is great and many do not like the idea. There are so many potential health and medical promise with the breakthroughs that stem cell research can bring, according to the researchers. The public needs to get educated about stem cell research so they know what it is all about and then they can form an educated opinion about it. If we know what it is and how it can benefit everyone in the long run, people will be more willing to accept the idea and not protest it so much.

It is believed by researchers that stem cells can help get rid of cancers, birth defects, and much more. They feel that it is the answer they have been searching for to aid in the curing of many diseases and health issues. By understanding the way normal cells develop will help the scientists understand, and hopefully correct, the errors which cause the health problems. Somewhere in the process of the normal cell developing the cancer cells or birth defects worm their way into the process and scientists want to find out how this happens and possibly prevent it in the future.

Adult stem cells are the only ones used so far to treat human diseases. These diseases include diabetes and advanced kidney cancer. There is research testing going on today for some different diseases and health issues. Scientists are testing the abilities of adult stem cells to treat some diseases and you can search for clinical studies, which are using stem cells, to treat a disease by going to www.clinicaltrials.gov.

It is hoped by the scientists and others that some day they will be able to supply the needed organs and tissues sick people need transplants for. There is a very big shortage of needed organs and tissues and if the stem cell research can solve this very big problem it would be phenomenal. Many people could live out their lives to be a ripe old age instead of suffering and waiting in line for a transplant or breakthrough.

Since 1998 human embryonic stem cells have been studied but there was no Federal funds available to help in this research until August 9, 2001. A research group led by Dr. James Thomson at the University of Wisconsin. They developed a technique to isolate the stem cells and grow them. Research for stem cells is still in it’s early stages but with the aid they are getting from the Federal Government, they may be able to advance more quickly. Time and a lot of research will tell us if this will work or not.
